Family Business Awards - if time is the obstacle?

Some of you will have seen our blog entry last week on The Wilson Organisation - Family Business Awards.

It struck us that some companies may not enter since they are too busy running their business - they lack time to make their entry?

If this is the case then EMS are prepared to help complete their entry free of charge.

Anyone interested should contact enquiries@emseff.co.uk quickly since the closing date for entries is 23rd July 2010.

PAC man returns

No it’s not the computer game from the 80’s (or was it even the 70’s - can I remember that far back?).

In this case PAC stands for Productivity and Competitiveness analysis. I have just been trained on the technique and am about to be registered as a PAC analyst (there are about 300 in the country). I am sure that you use good KPI’s in your business and from some basic accounting and production data these measures can be used to focus in on where the business may need to concentrate it’s attention inorder to improve. The measures are:

  • Not Right First Time
  • Delivery Schedule Achievement
  • People Productivity
  • Stock Turns
  • OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness - a measure of availability / performance / quality)
  • Value Added per Person
  • Floor Space Utilisation.

Watch this space and I will keep you updated on progress and projects.

Leicester Tigers Surprise

Our MD is a Leicester Tigers fan and recently reached a milestone age - desretion prevents mentioning the number!!

His wife Linda and family organised a surprise, arranging a hospitality package at the recent game against Bath Rugby in the LV cup. Tigers won.

An additional surprise was our sponsorship of the match ball. Geoff met Engand and Tigers player Tom Croft and was presented with a signed ball at the end of the match.

All the best Geoff.

A Letter from Rita

I have now finished the RITA course which supplemented and tested my knowledge on the LEAN syllabus that we cover on the NVQ BIT courses (Business Improvement Techniques). I am glad to say I passed!!!!! We covered a lot of subjects in the 8 weeks -Effective Teamwork, TPM (Total Productive Maintenance), Lead Time Analysis, Statistical Process Control, Workplace organisation and Mistake Proofing just to name a few. It was good to network with people delivering the same subjects and to share experiences. Even as the Train to Gain funding starts to take severe pressure from the Government spending reductions it is good to find out that these techniques really do make a difference to the companies that we work in. After all they are self funding from the savings they generate!

Cool Leadership!

I’m just embarking on the second of three visits to Poland to deliver leadership training. Its cold in Poland at -10 degrees! On my first visit I trained inspectors, on this visit I am delivering to Head Teachers or Directors as they’re known over here.

Whilst its difficult to deliver through a translator I find it amazing that people, wherever they are, have not got a grasp of the funamental principles of managing and leading people. I look forward to returning to the more easily understood feedback in the UK.

Coaching Accreditation

Currently accreditation for the coaching industry is done on a voluntary basis. Many areas of the world, including the UK are looking to move to mandatory accreditation. The IIC (International Institute of Coaching) is one of the leading overseeing organisations for coaching. It has existed for over 10 years and was formerly known as the ECI (European Coaching Institute). The IIC not only operates to raise the standard of coaching and coaches, but also approves and accredits training courses in coaching.  Accreditation for coaches takes the form of – significant evidence of professional development, proof of extensive paid coaching, a live assessment of the coaching skills of the coach by an IIC member, a range of testimonials and a final interview. Written by Tony Brooks our accredited coach with the IIC

On the road to RITA

Having just been confirmed as an A1 assessor for NVQ ii in B-IT (Business improvement techniques), last week I then went onto sit a 2 hour exam (how many years since any of us did that?) to test my knowledge in B-IT. To the uninitiated thats LEAN or the Toyota Production System. I passed!!!!!!!!!!!!! And now I am on my road to Rita approval. The qualification is organised by the Manufacturing Skills Alliance and sponsered by the Sector Skills Council. Just eight more training weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Malaysian Message from Linda

I’ve just returned from attending and delivering to “The 14th International Conference on Thinking, 2009” in Malaysia. The conference was attended by over 1000 delegates from around the World and I was lucky to meet up with some old friends from the Theory of Constraints World. Now I have the problem of telling you about the Conference for this blog! Rather than rattle on about the speakers I heard I thought it would be more beneficial to give you a couple of little gems I heard:

1.   Gandhi – developing wisdom

As a young man Gandhi was late for a train in India – he jumped on board as it was leaving and one of his sandals fell back on to the platform. What did he do?  He immediately threw the other sandal back onto the platform. His reasoning being that one sandal was no use to him or to the person who picked up the sandal he had dropped. He could not have both sandals so he donated a usable pair to whoever found them. Many of us would eventually have thought to do this but probably 20 miles down the line. He demonstrated his innate/acquired ability to reason, solve a problem and still consider the needs of others. The later can often be forgotten in the hard nosed world of day to day business.

2.   Cross the river

Edward De Bono gave an example of how important it is to see things from all sides and be aware of the perspective of others.

A man stands on one side of a stream and shouts to someone on the opposite bank. “How do I get to the other side? The reply?  “You’re already there!

How often do we have conversations where we talk at cross purposes because we fail to take account of the viewpoint of others and build our solutions on assumptions that may or may not be valid?

 3.   EBNE

Edward De Bono also spoke about continuous improvement and not resting on laurels. He suggests a new word EBNE - Excellent but not enough

 4.   Intelligence  Howard Gardner spoke of the different intelligences that people use and how we should recognise strengths in others and use their expertise and skills. Alongside the usually quoted 7 intelligences he speculated on adding another – Gut intelligence. This would resonate with many of us who sometimes just “feel” solutions/situations. To be used with caution but not ignored was his suggestion

I gave a presentation on motivating people for optimum achievement/results and the need to apply thought and intelligence to the handling of projects and personnel. There was a focus on managing conflict.

If you want any further information on the above, please contact EMS at enquiries@emseff.co.uk  or email ltrapnell@hotmail.com  Additional information on the Conference can be found on the following link http://www.14ththinkingconference.com/   The 2011 Conference is going to be held in Belfast – more detail later  Written by Linda Trapnell
