PAC - Productivity and Competativeness Framework

I have now qualified as a PAC analyst for the Sector Skills Councils. This is an offering to look at a business and determine areas where they might improve their Quality, Cost and Delivery (QCD). It is based on the 7 DTI measures of:

  1. Not Right First Time (NRFT) - internal and external
  2. Delivery Schedule Achievement - (OTIF)
  3. People Productivity
  4. Stock Turns
  5. Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
  6. Value Added per Person
  7. Floor Space Utilisation

BIT - a breakdown

The NVQ qualification in Business Improvement Techniques is now under the new QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework) and has become QBIT at Levels 2,3 and 4. The skills delivered in Business Improvement Techniques (BIT) are key LEAN tools which candidates learn and practice during their course. The businesses I work with find that these drive the individuals to find the hidden wastes and improve productivity. The subjects that can be covered are:

  • Health and Safety
  • Contributing to or leading effective teams
  • Applying workplace organisation techtiques (5’s)
  • Applying continuous improvement techniques (Kaizen)
  • Developing visual management systems
  • Carry out problem solving activities
  • Analysing and selecting parts for improvement
  • Creating standard operating procedures
  • Low Process analysis
  • Mistake proofing (Poka Yoke)
  • Set up reduction (SMED)
  • Applying Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
  • Lead time analysis
  • Failure Mode and Effect analysis (FMEA)
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Value Stream Mapping

RITA and PAC

I finally got the certificates through for the CPD I completed towards the end of last year and early this year. So my work on Business Improvement Techniques (BIT) continues for NVQ’s as they migrate towards QCF qualifications. Despite the cuts and the changes we are all facing, the principals of BIT are as important as ever they were. The problem is that the improvement programs have to stand on their own merit and not be supported by government grants. Almost all of the projects we complete do, but the company has to be convinced. More on Rita and PAC in future blogs.

PTLLS report #2

I know, I know I know. It’s been far too long between report #1 and report#2. So long in fact I bet you have forgotten what it was all about. PTLLS is a training qualification which supports my work on NVQ’s in Business Improvement Techniques. More info available at:  http://www.cityandguilds.com/17976.html  http://www.get-licensed.co.uk/ptlls7303

I said this was due to finish in June and we are (all 18 of us in the group!) still here straining to reach the finish line. Thats a tale for later blogs and management issues with the college. Let me just give you my overall feelings about the course itself.

Someone told me as I started out on this qualification that it would take over my life. I of course dismissed that off hand. ‘Not me’ I said. But they were right. Producing accurate written assignments 35 years after leaving Uni was a challenge. However the basic learning experiences and concepts serve me well in my every day work and once again teamwork wins the day. It still amazes me that you throw 18 total stranges into a room and give them a common goal, and a good team emerges. Still optomistic after all these years!!!!!

PTLLS report #1

PTLLS is a qualification called Preparing to Teach in the Life Long Learning Sector. I have just started college for the next 12 weeks to take that level 4 qualification as part of the NVQ delivery for Business Improvement Techniques. The first sessions covered Ground Rules,  Roles, Responsibilities and Boundaries. Looking forward to the homework every week (!!!!!!!!). If you would like to know more about the qualification check out these websites:

Empowering the people

I was reminded the other day, just how important it is to have people within your business making decisions at the right level and empowered to see those decisions through. The scenario was that the management team were all very busy people (running the business as you would expect) and, as with any new project, it was difficult for them to give it the right level of attention. Two managers took separate decisions to move staff in their teams and dedicated them to the project in question. Within weeks the  two individuals became the ‘authority’ and the project started to fly.

  • decisions were made quicker
  • not only that they were better decisions using relevant and current information
  • the managers felt more in control
  • the individuals relished the challenge and the opportunity.
  • The project is now on target

Never underestimate the knowledge and drive of the people that work for you and the credit you will get for empowering them.

PAC man returns

No it’s not the computer game from the 80’s (or was it even the 70’s - can I remember that far back?).

In this case PAC stands for Productivity and Competitiveness analysis. I have just been trained on the technique and am about to be registered as a PAC analyst (there are about 300 in the country). I am sure that you use good KPI’s in your business and from some basic accounting and production data these measures can be used to focus in on where the business may need to concentrate it’s attention inorder to improve. The measures are:

  • Not Right First Time
  • Delivery Schedule Achievement
  • People Productivity
  • Stock Turns
  • OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness - a measure of availability / performance / quality)
  • Value Added per Person
  • Floor Space Utilisation.

Watch this space and I will keep you updated on progress and projects.

A Letter from Rita

I have now finished the RITA course which supplemented and tested my knowledge on the LEAN syllabus that we cover on the NVQ BIT courses (Business Improvement Techniques). I am glad to say I passed!!!!! We covered a lot of subjects in the 8 weeks -Effective Teamwork, TPM (Total Productive Maintenance), Lead Time Analysis, Statistical Process Control, Workplace organisation and Mistake Proofing just to name a few. It was good to network with people delivering the same subjects and to share experiences. Even as the Train to Gain funding starts to take severe pressure from the Government spending reductions it is good to find out that these techniques really do make a difference to the companies that we work in. After all they are self funding from the savings they generate!

On the road to RITA

Having just been confirmed as an A1 assessor for NVQ ii in B-IT (Business improvement techniques), last week I then went onto sit a 2 hour exam (how many years since any of us did that?) to test my knowledge in B-IT. To the uninitiated thats LEAN or the Toyota Production System. I passed!!!!!!!!!!!!! And now I am on my road to Rita approval. The qualification is organised by the Manufacturing Skills Alliance and sponsered by the Sector Skills Council. Just eight more training weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
